Mystik Dan emerged victorious in the 150th Kentucky Derby after a thrilling photo finish, edging Sierra Leone and Forever Young in one of the closest races in Triple Crown history.

Jockey’s Triumph: 

Brian Hernandez Jr., Mystik Dan’s jockey, celebrated his first Kentucky Derby win and maiden triumph in the Triple Crown series, describing the moments before the official declaration as the “longest few minutes” of his life.

The final leaderboard showcased Mystik Dan’s triumph, followed by Sierra Leone and Forever Young in second and third place, respectively. Stewards deliberated over the close finish before confirming Mystik Dan’s victory.

Ken McPeek, Mystik Dan’s trainer, commended Hernandez for his exceptional performance and labeled him one of the most underrated riders in racing.

Prize Money Breakdown: 

Mystik Dan’s victory secured the top prize from a purse worth $5 million, with the winning team earning $3.1 million. Sierra Leone and Forever Young secured second and third place, earning $1 million and $500,000, respectively.

Mystik Dan’s triumph, with 18-1 odds, marked an upset victory in the Kentucky Derby, reminiscent of historic upsets in the race’s past, including Donerail’s victory with 91-1 odds in 1913.

Triple Crown Continues: 

With the Kentucky Derby concluded, the focus shifts to the Preakness Stakes on May 18 and the Belmont Stakes on June 8, completing the Triple Crown series. Both races will be posted live on NBC and Peacock.
