A Brooklyn school gymnasium was inspected and deemed unsafe after Friday’s earthquake, prompting concerns about structural integrity and safety measures.

Findings of Department of Buildings Inspection:

The city’s Department of Buildings conducts a structural stability inspection at 370 Fountain Avenue, revealing step cracking and vertical cracks in the interior masonry walls of the school’s gymnasium. Due to safety concerns, the gymnasium is vacated until repairs are completed.

Friday’s magnitude 4.8 earthquake rattles the tri-state area, prompting about 80 reports of earthquake-related damage, primarily from Manhattan and the Bronx. 

Additional engineering and inspection staff are deployed to respond to potential building damage.

Response and Cautionary Measures:

The Department of Buildings urges New Yorkers to remain vigilant and report any damage or concerns promptly. 

Commissioner Jimmy Oddo emphasizes the importance of proactive reporting to address potential issues that may arise in the aftermath of the earthquake.
