The New York Police Department (NYPD) has unveiled its latest tool for tackling illegal parking and traffic congestion: the Barnacle.

This device, resembling a SpongeBob character and equipped with advanced technology, aims to revolutionize parking enforcement in the city.

Features and Functionality:

The Barnacle is a plastic yellow box that adheres to a vehicle’s windshield using suction cups, applying a thousand pounds of pressure to secure itself.

It boasts a built-in motor and automated capabilities, adjusting pressure based on temperature changes. This innovative design ensures safer officer deployment and facilitates efficient tracking of the attached vehicle.

Advantages Over Traditional Methods:

The Barnacle offers several advantages over traditional tire boots. It can be deployed in 20 to 30 seconds, significantly faster than manually installing tire boots.

Additionally, it provides real-time GPS tracking, enabling law enforcement to monitor the vehicle’s location and receive alerts if tampering is detected.

Deployment and Expansion:

Currently undergoing a pilot program in Queens, the Barnacle is set to expand citywide in the coming weeks.

With plans to increase the number of units deployed, the NYPD aims to enhance parking enforcement efforts across all boroughs.

Enforcement and Removal Process:

Once affixed to a vehicle, removing the Barnacle requires following the instructions displayed on the device and paying a $185 fine.

Only authorized traffic agents can remove the Barnacle after payment, ensuring compliance with parking regulations.
