“Car-Free Earth Day” debuted in 2016, when select streets in Manhattan were closed to promote sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.

The event has since grown to encompass all five boroughs of New York City, fostering community engagement and promoting alternative modes of transportation.

The 2024 celebration includes closing 53 streets and plazas throughout the city, offering public art installations and community programming instead of vehicular traffic.

Kickoff for Open Streets and Public Space Programming Season:

This event operates as the official launch of the city’s Open Streets and Public Space Programming season, highlighting the importance of reclaiming streets for public use.

Ydanis Rodriguez, the city’s Transportation Commissioner, emphasizes the significance of leaving vehicles at home and embracing streets as shared open spaces for all.

The event encourages New Yorkers to reduce their carbon footprint and foster environmental appreciation through programming, music, and activities.

Event Details and Schedule:

“Open Streets: Car-Free Earth Day” will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, offering participants a range of activities and experiences.
