New York City prepares for its most extensive Open Streets event to date in celebration of Earth Day, with plans to close a record number of roads to traffic.
Origins of “Car-Free Earth Day”:
“Car-Free Earth Day” debuted in 2016, when select streets in Manhattan were closed to promote sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.
The event has since grown to encompass all five boroughs of New York City, fostering community engagement and promoting alternative modes of transportation.
The 2024 celebration includes closing 53 streets and plazas throughout the city, offering public art installations and community programming instead of vehicular traffic.

This event operates as the official launch of the city’s Open Streets and Public Space Programming season, highlighting the importance of reclaiming streets for public use.
