Czech Republic, Lithuania, and Romania are all just high on this year’s World Happiness Report – and score exceptionally high when it comes to pleasure for people under 30.
When the annual World Happiness Report was released in March 2024, familiar Scandinavian countries continued their reign at the top.
However, a noteworthy trend emerged as Central and Eastern European countries made significant strides in happiness rankings, outpacing some of their Western European counterparts.
Surprising Rankings
Over the past three years, countries like the Czech Republic and Lithuania have broken into the top 20, claiming the 18th and 19th spots respectively. Slovenia closely trails behind at 21st place. This marks a notable shift, with these nations surpassing established Western European countries in overall happiness.
Youthful Happiness
What’s particularly intriguing is that the surge in happiness is largely driven by younger residents.
Lithuania, for instance, tops the Happiness of the Young report, with Serbia, Romania, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia also ranking highly among respondents under 30. This indicates a significant improvement in the well-being of younger generations in these countries.
Reasons Behind the Rise
Experts attribute this trend to various factors, including improved economic opportunities domestically. With more decent job prospects available, young people are choosing to remain in their home countries rather than seeking employment abroad.
This shift has led to a more diverse demographic makeup, instilling a sense of hope and optimism about the future among residents.
A Promising Future
The ascent of Central and Eastern European countries in global happiness rankings reflects positive developments in these regions.
As young people find greater fulfillment and opportunities at home, it not only enhances individual well-being but also contributes to the overall happiness of society. This shift underscores the dynamic nature of happiness and the potential for positive change in diverse cultural contexts.
