New Jersey experienced another earthquake on Saturday, this one registering a magnitude of 2.9 near Gladstone in Somerset County, approximately 50 miles from New York City.
Reports of Minimal Damage:
As per the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, no reports of damage to structures, roadways, or infrastructure have been received following the recent seismic activity.
Recurrence Following Recent 4.8-Magnitude Quake:
The recent quake comes just weeks after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook much of the tri-state area. The U.S. Geological Survey documented over 50 aftershocks after the seismic event on April 5.
Unique Impact of Eastern U.S. Earthquakes:
While infrequent, earthquakes in the eastern United States tend to have a stronger and broader impact than those in the western part of the country.
This phenomenon is attributed to the region’s older rocks and geological formations, according to the USGS.
Challenges in Earthquake Prediction:
Despite the importance of studying aftershocks to enhance preparedness for future seismic events, current forecasting methods remain limited.
In a recent press statement, Sarah McBride, representing the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, emphasized the unpredictability of earthquake occurrences, highlighting the inability to pinpoint the precise timing, location, or magnitude of future quakes.
